直到本周初，莫德里奇仍对自己的未来一无所知，由于迫切想知道今日是否会是他在伯纳乌的最后一战，以及是否需要向球迷正式告别，莫德里奇主动询问皇马是否考虑再续约一年，得到的答复是“暂时不会续约，但尚未最终确定。”

于是莫德里奇告知皇马他将发布离队声明，皇马方面要求莫德里奇等待，理由是“俱乐部尚未明确下赛季计划，而且官方声明应该由俱乐部方面发布。”但莫德里奇明确表示，如果俱乐部的决定是不续约，他将自行宣布离队。
